Skateboards

Skateboards began evolving around the early 1900's with the introduction of the "scooter." These scooters consisted essentially of rollerskates attached to a flat peice of wood and often were accompanied by a milk crate attached to the front for added control. Over time, things simplified and the "handlebars" were removed to create a sense of freedom that came with having only the board and wheels.

In the 70's and 80's skateboarding took on a whole new dimension as skate parks began opening up across the country. During this time skateboarding began to enter a more "vertical" phase involving vert ramps and aerial maneuvers. Because of the added liabilities this phase created, skatepark insurance became so expensive that many skatepark owners began closing their doors and by the late 1980's skateboarding had once again become almost exclusivey a street sport.

In recent years we're once again seeing a slow but steady rise in the sport's popularity, and new legislation is making it easier for skateparks to be opened and maintained. Whether you prefer the excitement of vert ramps or freestyle, skateboarding is an exciting sport to become involved with.
